This 2.5km route shows you how basket making became a key trade in Saint-Mard with seven information panels along the way.Saint-Mard was the main centre for wicker workers in Gaume. This was the only municipality that already had professional basket makers in the late 18th century. There were more than 50 of them by 1920 before fading out completely by around 1960 due to the effects of the economic crisis of the 1930s. However, basket making is not just a distant memory, it is still very much part of everyday lives. This can be seen by the return of professional basket makers in the region and the new boom in this craft, practised using both traditional and contemporary methods.
