A gift bearing a message… a mark of esteem and recognition for the excellent hospitality received by Canadian military aviators. In 1955, Virton pulled out all the stops (as did Florenville and Longuyon in France) to welcome hundreds of Canadian military aviators from the 1st Wing who came to stay with their family. When they were leaving, the Canadians gave the people of Virton and Longuyon a real Indian totem pole from Canada as a souvenir of their friendship. In 1992, the original totem pole, by then very much deteriorated, was resculpted in an identical manner by Claude Goffinet.
