Presentation

The top of the rock offers a panoramic view over the Semois and the islands near the ‘Long Meadow’ which were cultivated long ago. The only easy access is by the Semois. The name (meaning ‘cracked rock’) comes simply from the big crack in this rock which is actually quite a deep crevice that could be used as a hiding place. There is no legend about this rock but there is a historical fact. In August 1914, following bloody battles in the region, a dozen French soldiers found themselves behind enemy lines. At first they were put up by Félix Lavigne, a resident of Martué. Due to the danger that this posed to the whole village, they were evacuated into the forest and then hidden in the cracked rock. Félix’s eldest son, 13-year-old Martial Lavigne, would bring them supplies every night.
