A real reference of modern architecture for its originality, the Lapidaire Museum fits perfectly into the landscape. In 1956 it was decided to build a museum on the Montauban site to house archaeological discoveries. The Belgian-Polish architect Constantin Brodzki and his designer partner Corneille Hannoset were recruited for the job.The challenge set for the two men was for the museum to exist in the middle of the forest without supervision, equipment or maintenance. Following some sketches, influenced by Bauhaus principles, the idea of an underground museum was suggested by the architect and archaeologist Henri Lacoste. Constantin Brodzki thus designed a half-buried module consisting of four juxtaposed cubic units, with lighting provided on one glass side, on the hillside.
